7 Unexpected Benefits of Regular Exercise

Last Updated on August 25, 2017 by Jeff

For the majority of people who begin working out, their goals are quite simple and straightforward. You probably aim to live a longer, healthier life, for example. You may also be interested in slimming down — or perhaps you dream of getting totally ripped!

These goals are certainly among the chief benefits of regular exercise. However, they’re not the only benefits. In fact, some of the positive effects of working out may actually surprise you. Here are a few of our favorites:

Boost Creativity

Looking for a bit of inspiration? A study conducted at Leiden University in the Netherlands found that people who exercise regularly performed better on a series of cognitive tests aimed at gaging creativity. This occurs because exercise helps stimulate the Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor — in other words, it stimulates the growth of cells in the hippocampus, which is responsible for imagination, along with other crucial functions.

Promote Relaxation

Physical exertion triggers the release of chemicals such as serotonin, which promotes a sense of well-being. So even though it may sound counterintuitive, going out on a run may actually promote relaxation better than a bubble bath or a Netflix session.

Improve Skin Health

Trouble with acne, eczema, uneven complexion, or other skin issues? Working out can help regulate hormones and boost the immune system. The sweating that occurs during a heavy workout can also help clear out your pores. The result of all of these factors is brighter, healthier skin!

Develop Your Memory

When your heart is pumping hard, your brain gets extra blood flow and increased oxygen. The result is that all these nutrients aid in the processing and retainment of new information, leading to better short and long-term memory. So next time you need a study break when preparing for that big test — consider hitting the gym!

Control Cravings

Whether you realize it or not, you are constantly seeking dopamine — sometimes through healthy activities such as running, socializing, and listening to music, sometimes through unhealthy activities such as overeating, drinking, or playing video games. The good news is, every time you give your body a dose of dopamine through a healthy route such as exercise, you decrease your cravings for the bad stuff!

Limit Migraines and Headaches

Another important chemical released by working out is endorphins — and one of the best things about these little guys is that they help decrease sensitivity to pain. For people suffering from migraines or chronic headaches in general, this can be a tremendous benefit.

Self-Confidence

Sure, developing a rockin’ swimsuit/bikini bod can boost your confidence quite a bit. But the self-confidence boosting effects of a workout actually have an impact from day one. This is because many of the aforementioned neurochemical effects triggered by a workout also play an important role in regulating your sense of confidence and self-worth!
