Schwinn’s long history in the bicycles and fitness equipment industry began in 1895 and since then it has been an icon in the recreation product, and home and commercial fitness worlds. The company was founded in Chicago by Ignaz Schwinn and his partner Adolph Arnold. Schwinn led innovation in the bicycle industry with several firsts including the bicycle balloon tire in 1933; Cyclelock®, a bicycle theft solution in 1935; and in 1938 the fore-wheel brake, cantilever frame and the spring fork, which are the predecessor of today’s off-road bicycles. In 1965, Schwinn introduced their first in-home workout machines and today they have whole lines of upright bikes, recumbent bikes, steppers, treadmills, elliptical and home gyms.
What We Love About the Schwinn 430 Elliptical:
When you buy a Schwinn, regardless if it’s a bicycle or a piece of exercise equipment, you know you’re getting quality. The same goes for the 430 Elliptical. This elliptical machine is strong, durable and solid in construction. On top of that, Schwinn provides a computer with awesome features on the 430 Elliptical. Features like pre-programmed workouts, user profile capabilities and downloading to track performance enhance the user’s enjoyment of this machine.
Quality & Durability
With a 100 year old company that has basically led the way in the bicycle industry, when you buy a Schwinn, you know that you are getting quality. Their innovations throughout the years have redefined the bicycling and fitness industries. Even though lightweight, the 430 Elliptical accommodates a user up to 300 lbs. Due to its oversized crossbar tubing, center frame support and front positioned flywheel, this elliptical machine is extremely study and durable.
For an entry level elliptical machine, you are getting a pretty good computer on the Schwinn 430 Elliptical. The system has dual screens that may be a little confusing until you set up your user profile. The computer allows you to set up two separate profiles. It also comes with a total of 22 program including 9 workout programs and 8 heart rate controls. The computer also allows you to quickly adjust the 22 levels of resistance offered by the 430 Elliptical. Compare this to the Nautilus E614’s 20 levels of resistance.
Another great feature of the Schwinn 430 Elliptical is the ability to download and track your workout performance. This elliptical machine’s computer allows you to track a number of criteria like time, distance and calories by transferring the data to the Schwinn Connect™ or to MyFitnessPal.
The biggest drawback of the Schwinn 430 Elliptical is the incline capabilities. The elliptical machine comes with 6 incline levels up to 10°. While you can get a good workout with this, other machines offer up to 20° of incline. The biggest issue, however, is that adjusting the incline is all manual. This means that if you want to adjust your incline during your workout to target different muscle groups, you’re going to have to stop your workout and then start back up.
Heart Rate Monitoring
The Schwinn 430 Elliptical offers heart rate monitoring from hand grips. After holding the sensors for about 10 seconds, the information is transferred to the computer for display. However, there is no accessibility to user a chest strap. Using a chest strap would be beneficial. The continuous readings from the chest strap would be especially useful since the machine utilizes 8 heart rate programs on its computer.
Final Word on the Schwinn 430 Elliptical:
Overall, the Schwinn 430 Elliptical is a good buy. For an entry level elliptical machine you are getting a quality piece of exercise equipment made by Schwinn. The Schwinn 430 Elliptical does lack a few conveniences on this model including automated incline and the ability to use a heart rate chest strap. That said, the computer has a number of great options, including the pre-programmed workouts and the ability to download and track your performance.
