Schwinn A40 EllipticalOverview:

The Schwinn A40 Elliptical is a very nice entry level machine with some great features to allow users to enjoy workouts, to extend their workouts and to keep them coming back for more. It has a water bottle holder to keep you hydrated throughout your workout. You also get a cooling fan and a reading rack to rest your phone, tablet or book. This feature is sometimes missing from entry-level machines, but it’s nice because it keeps you exercising longer.

The nicest feature on the A40 Elliptical however is the six (6) pre-programmed workouts on its computer.  Again, Schwinn provides a little extra by designing the routines for you to ensure an intense workout.  Read on for our full review of the Schwinn A4o Elliptical.

The Schwinn A40 Elliptical comes with a step-by-step, fully-illustrated manual and tools to assembly the machine. You will need some basic tools to put this elliptical together and though Schwinn says it take two people to assemble, one can get the job done. Assembly should take 45-60 minutes.

About Schwinn:

Schwinn was founded in 1895 and since then has been icon in the bicycle, recreation product, and home and commercial fitness worlds.  In 1965, Schwinn introduced their first in-home workout machines and today they have whole lines of upright bikes, recumbent bikes, steppers, treadmills, elliptical and home gyms.

What We Love About the Schwinn A40 Elliptical:Schwinn A40 Elliptical Machine

When you buy a Schwinn, you’re getting quality. That’s what we love most. The A40 Elliptical exceeds quality expectations for an entry-level elliptical. It’s strong, durable and will stay in place during your most intense workouts. It also provides some nice features. I’m not taking about the fan, water bottle holder, or the reading rack, which are all nice. Entry-level elliptical machines typically have a very basic computer, but this one has some ice features to it.

Quality & Durability

When you buy a Schwinn, you know that you are getting quality. The company has led the way in the bicycling industry for over 100 years and are now taking their innovations to the fitness world. Even though lightweight at only 90 lbs, the A40 Elliptical is very strong with its oversized stabilizers and levellers. The perimeter weighted flywheel keeps the elliptical in place and provides a very smooth motion. I didn’t see any reviewers comment negatively about the quality of the elliptical. At this price range, you are getting a very well built elliptical in the Schwinn A40 Elliptical.

Computer Programs

For an entry level elliptical machine, you would probably expect to get the basic readouts of your workout with a simple scan feature. The A40 Elliptical comes with a nice little upgrade with its six pre-programmed workouts. The resistances are pre-programmed through its fun rides, mountain rides and challenges. You get two programs in each of these three settings as well as the ability to manually program the elliptical for you own workout. Pre-programmed workouts like this are great because there are already intense, calorie burning routines programmed and all you have to do is hit the start button.

Elliptical Schwinn A40What Isn’t So Great:

Stride Length

The Schwinn A40 Elliptical offers 17” stride length. This is a pretty short stride length. Most strides start out at about 18” and that is still considered short. For taller users over 6 feet this may not be comfortable and they may feel they are not getting a full extension. Typically, an elliptical looking to accommodate everyone will give you an adjustable stride up to about 20-22”. The stride on the A40 Elliptical is not adjustable at all.

Weight Capacity

While the Schwinn A40 Elliptical is excluding the taller users with its short stride, it is also leaving out a fair number of people with its 270 lb weight capacity. It looks like Schwinn® designed this elliptical for an average or even smaller build user. If you’re not average, then this might not be your elliptical. If you’re on the upper side of these capacities, and want to risk the purchase, also know that Schwinn® offers a lightweight warranty on the A40 Elliptical with two (2) years on the frame and only six (6) months on the parts.

Final Word on the Schwinn A40 Elliptical:

You can find the Schwinn A40 Elliptical right around $400 through Amazon. For an entry level elliptical machine you are getting a quality piece of exercise equipment made by Schwinn. The computer is very nice with its six (6) pre-programmed workouts. The elliptical is strong and sturdy and is sure to provide the average user enjoyable workouts for a long time. If you are not the average user as far as height and weight, Schwinn may not have had you in mind first when designing this machine. If that’s the case, give it a test drive before you run out and make the purchase.
