Staying Fit During Your Summer Vacation

Last Updated on June 3, 2017 by Jeff

Many people use the summer months to get away and take a vacation in the sun. However, it’s important to keep focused on fitness while you travel so you don’t fall behind. Here are some ways to stay fit on your summer vacation.

Participate in Water Sports

Water sports are a great way to stay cool and get fit at the same time. Going for a swim in the pool, lake, or ocean is a great full-body workout. You can also spend some time kayaking or canoeing, which will work your arms while you have fun. If you have access to a boat, try water skiing or wakeboarding. Surfing will strengthen your entire body, and it’s so fun you won’t even notice the time passing. If you’re near flat water, stand-up paddleboarding is a good option that will work your arms and core.

Utilize the Gym

Summer can mean excruciatingly hot weather and high humidity that makes it unpleasant to exercise outside. Don’t use that as an excuse to skip your workouts, though. If your hotel or rental unit has a gym, you may want to take advantage of the machines and equipment. There are also plenty of other tips and tricks for sticking to your workout schedule while you travel. You can follow a fitness video or DVD, do bodyweight exercises, or even find an indoor class somewhere.

Get Competitive

If you’re on a trip with family or friends, you can all get some exercise while having fun and hanging out. Playing group games and sports is an awesome way to bond while on vacation. Get everyone together for a game of touch football, beach volleyball, or even just some relay races on the lawn.

Play in the Sand

If you’re on a beach or lake with lots of sand, take advantage of the landscape. The sand is a great workout surface. The soft, shifting surface works your muscles a little harder while still being easy on your joints. Go for a run on the beach to strengthen your calf muscles or do some yoga for a balance challenge.

If you really want to focus on your physical health while you travel, consider going on a trip that is entirely focused on fitness. Relax and unwind on a yoga retreat in Bali. Learn to surf at a camp in Costa Rica or San Diego. Trek up a mountain like Denali in Alaska or go on a backpacking trip through the Rockies. Spend a few days hiking the Appalachian Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail. There are trips and activities for all personalities, preferences, and budgets, so find one that works for you.
